It is the question that we often ask when a terrible upheaval happens, such as an accident, a disease, or a loss. They all come suddenly, unexpectedly, and they could make a big life-changing from there. Do you think we can answer that question: “WHY ME?”. Many people try to answer that question for their beloved one who is suffering. They can blame for someone, something or karma or predestination, and so on.

However, personally, I think it is NOT the question that other people can simply answer for the one who is suffering. Firstly, their suffer is personal and unique. Only those who are undergoing really can understand how hurtful and despairing they feel physically and emotionally.
As a chaplain in hospital, I have listened to many patients sharing their stories. I experienced how hard the situation could be for them to face with many difficulties including losing control of their lives, appearances, relationships. They are alone and even feeling lonely in their hospitalisation. They have friends, family but why do they have to be alone in that situation? To be honest, I answered them that I do not understand either. I can only sit next to them, listen to them, hold that moment with them and pray for them in their tough situation.
Secondly, if patients need more time to mourn their sufferings or grief, I respect their time and offer them into God’s hands. The Holy Spirit will speak and work in them.
We are invited to be the channel of love and care for them.
We are invited to be patient with the patient in their way to learn patience themselves.
and last but not least, they need our prayers and trust in our God who love them very much and never abandoned anyone.
With love,
