On August 15, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. The term “goodbye” originally meant “God be with thee,” reflecting a wish for God’s presence with those departing. This feast poignantly symbolizes God’s presence throughout Mary’s life.

God was with Mary in the Immaculate Conception, during her childhood with Anna and Joachim, and at the Annunciation. God was with her throughout her pregnancy, in the journey to Egypt, and during the 30 years in Nazareth.

God was present as Jesus preached the Good News, on the journey to Jerusalem, and along the path to Calvary. God was with her in Jesus’ death, Resurrection, and at Pentecost.

Today, we honour how God assumed Mary into heaven with her whole being. Mary’s life exemplifies recognizing God’s presence in every event. Her faith, hope, and love inspire us to live confidently and courageously under God’s providence.

Happy feast day to all of us!

With love,
