Empathy originates from the Greek word Empathenia: em- meaning “into” and pathos meaning “feelings.” This etymology reflects a journey of entering into another’s emotional experience, akin to travelling to a new place. Let’s explore this analogy of empathy as a journey to a foreign land.
1. Prepare for the Journey:
Before embarking on a trip, it’s essential to prepare by deciding what to bring and what will enhance the experience. Similarly, when approaching someone who is heartbroken:
Show respect for their suffering.
Be patient and present through their painful experience.
Avoid judgment.
Refrain from giving unsolicited advice.
Offer a listening ear and a compassionate heart.
2. Immigration and Border Crossing:
When entering a new country, you need a valid passport and visa—essential documents for your entry. For those supporting the broken-hearted, our “passport” and “visa” are:
Our willingness to be present: “May I sit with you for a while?”Would you like a cup of coffee?” Would you like to share what you’re feeling?”
Sometimes, our offer of support may be declined, and that’s okay. We may need to wait and try again later.
3. Languages and Cultures:
In a new country, understanding the local language and culture is crucial. The right words and behaviours help bridge the gap and foster understanding.
For the broken-hearted, the “language” is one of non-judgment, respect, love, and understanding. This can include:
Silent presence
A comforting hug
Holding hands
Compassionate eye contact
Offering tissues
Walking alongside them in silence and so on.
The “culture” here values faith, hope, and love. It is characterized by patience, absence of pressure, and avoidance of trying to “fix” their pain. The core behaviors are kindness, care, and love. Through understanding and listening, we can facilitate healing.
4. Lessons from the Journey:
After visiting a new land, we return with memories, impressions, and experiences that often change us. Similarly, being with the broken-hearted leaves us with unique insights. Personally, I’ve found a deeper understanding of myself and others’ suffering. Beneath our daily facades lie vulnerabilities that need compassionate presence and attentive listening.
Let’s embark on this journey and become ambassadors of empathy.
With love,
Little-pencil
