Christmas is just around the corner! As the season approaches, many of us are wrapping up our work and studies, getting ready for the solemn feast of Christmas and the exciting holidays that follow. For me, after a busy day filled with activities, I cherish those moments when I can sit quietly, take a deep breath, clear my mind, and reflect on the blessings of the day.
In these moments of stillness, the story of The Little Match Girl often comes to mind. It’s a heartbreaking tale, especially with its tragic ending. But there’s something deeply powerful about the image of the matches. “She drew one out – ‘scratch!’ how it sputtered as it burned! It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was a truly wonderful light.” That little match ignited beautiful visions: a warm stove, a table full of food, a Christmas tree, twinkling lights, and her beloved grandmother. The final sentence of the story reads, “No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory she had entered with her grandmother, on New Year’s Day.”
Our lives are filled with struggles—pain, disappointment, loss, and grief—but within these hardships, there is always the possibility of lighting a little match. That small flame has the power to warm, to heal, and to illuminate our path toward something beautiful. We all need light in the darkness, and we have the ability to be that light. Christmas is the perfect time to open our hearts and receive the light of Jesus. When we do, we begin to see more clearly, hear more deeply, and feel more profoundly that God is with us on our journey, empowering us to shine in a world that desperately needs light.
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
So, let’s shine together, my dear friend, by sharing our light through good works this Christmas season!
With love,
Little-pencil
