Life’s essence lies in its transience. Time flows and transforms, just as the seasons shift. The cycle of life unfolds through constant change. These changes manifest in various forms: problems, challenges, sufferings, or alternatively, opportunities, life lessons, and chances for growth.
Ajahn Brahm, a wise monk, once said, “Whenever you experience pain and difficulty, remember the deeper meaning of suffering: asking the world for something it can never give you.” This insight speaks to the heart of our struggle with change. We often resist, desiring stability, comfort, and smooth sailing for ourselves and others. Yet, it is an illusion to believe we can control the flow of life.
To evolve into something better, we must embrace the inevitable process of change, which is inextricably linked to suffering. Take, for example, the butterfly. Its vibrant beauty, which fills us with awe, is the result of an arduous, often painful transformation within the cocoon. Unlike us, the butterfly does not question its suffering. It surrenders to the process, trusting that the pain will eventually give way to something greater.
The lesson here is simple: when you find yourself in difficulty or pain, recognize that you are in the midst of a transformative journey. Change is unfolding. It will not last forever. This suffering, this discomfort, is temporary, and in time, it will shape you into a stronger, wiser version of yourself. One day, you will emerge from your cocoon, just as the butterfly does—no longer a caterpillar, but something more beautiful and free.
